OTT osIn testing

The desktop that fixes itself.

A complete Linux desktop for people who want it to just work and to be able to undo anything. It looks after drivers, takes restore points, checks scripts and heals common problems.

In testing. Not available to download yet.

OTT os is Omarchy. The desktop underneath is Omarchy, created by David Heinemeier Hansson and its contributors: we track its upstream releases, merge them, and add our own tools on top. Kernlux is an independent company, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Omarchy project.

The three promises

What OTT os is for.

It fixes itself. You talk to it. Old hardware becomes useful and good-looking again.

01

It fixes itself

Drivers that would break your machine are refused, a restore point is taken before every change, and common problems are repaired quietly.

02

You talk to it

Ask it to open something, change a setting, find a file or sort out a problem, and it answers in plain words. Voice assistant: in testing.

03

Old hardware works again

It is built to run well on modest and older machines, and to look good doing it.

What is inside

Built for the day something goes wrong.

Every part of the system assumes a change can go badly, and makes sure you can get back.

DOCTOR

Hardware doctor

Finds your hardware and picks safe drivers. Refuses the ones known to break it.

  • Picks the driver set for the machine it is running on
  • Refuses a driver known to break that hardware
  • Tells you what it changed
UNDO

Restore points

A snapshot before every change. One command takes you back.

GUARD

Script guard

Reads a script before it runs and explains it in plain words.

HEAL

Self-healing

Fixes common problems quietly, and asks before anything bigger.

MOVE

Move your life

Export your settings, then import them on a new computer.

READY

A calm start

A boot screen that fades in, then a soft chime when it is ready.

TALK

An assistant you can speak to

Ask it to open something, change a setting, find a file or fix a problem, and it answers in plain words. It asks before it acts: its tools are limited to what you approve and nothing is granted by default. Voice assistant: in testing - push-to-talk and the voice pipeline are built, the wake word is not wired yet.

OTT os is in testing and is not available to download yet. It will be offered here when it is ready.
Coming from Windows or Mac

It should feel familiar in the first minute.

Not a different world to learn. The things you already expect are here, and what is not ready yet is labelled as such.

THE DOCK

A dock, and a Launchpad

SnapDock gives you the dock along the bottom and an all-apps grid like macOS. Click, and it opens.

SNAP

Windows that snap

Drag a window to an edge and it takes half or a quarter of the screen, like Windows. Saved layouts bring a whole arrangement back.

UNDO

Undo, always

A restore point before every change, so the answer to a bad update is one click back.

WORDS

No command line needed

You can describe what you want instead of typing it. The assistant answers in plain words, and asks first.

PRIVACY

Yours stays yours

The assistant runs on your computer: the model, the speech recognition and the voice are local. The microphone is opt-in, and nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose a cloud model yourself.

PLANNED

Still to come

One settings window with everything in it, and a guided first run that carries your files and habits over from your old computer.

The foundation

What it is built on.

We are not starting from nothing, and we do not pretend to. Kernlux is independent, and not affiliated with or endorsed by the projects below.

01

Arch Linux

The base system: the packages, the boot chain and the tools everything else runs on.

02

Omarchy

The Arch-based desktop by David Heinemeier Hansson and its contributors. OTT os starts from Omarchy, and keeps its copyright and licence notice in the system.

03

Hyprland, Quickshell and Qt

The window manager and the toolkits that draw our desktop and our apps.

04

What we add

The hardware doctor, restore points, the script guard, self-healing, the calm start, our own applications, and the voice agent: an assistant you can talk to, in development. Push-to-talk and the voice pipeline are built; the wake word is not wired yet.
